Work in the garden in December

We are in the middle of winter: the hours of light are at a minimum and we are almost at the peak of the cold. In reality, the temperatures in our country are closely linked to the geographical position: when in the North almost all the garden is at rest, in the South and on the coasts we still have many flowers and fruits.

It is however possible to make the garden pleasant everywhere, with a careful design that includes ornamental essences also in this period.

In general, however, it is the moment when you can give yourself a little rest, also dedicating yourself to reading gardening books, consulting catalogs of plants and seeds.

How to make the garden pleasant?

Of course, the garden may not be as lively as in May, but a skilful design always includes scaled flowering essences and ornamental elements for the less favorable seasons.

We can prepare pots in which to place cyclamen, violets, hellebores, heather and callune: they are resistant and grow even at low temperatures, especially if we are careful to keep them sheltered at night, on a windowsill in the south. In milder areas, continue the chrysanthemums bloom and that of the sasanqua camellias begins, suitable for growing in soil or in pots, of viburnum tinus, calicanto, hamamelis and citrus fruiting. Let's not underestimate the berry essences: botanical or wrinkled roses, holly, pyracantha, nandina domestica, skimmia, cotoneaster ... Of great impact, especially with snow and frost are the ornamental grasses and the colored bark shrubs, such as cornus or some maples.
